Woodshop

English:

So today I went to my 1st period wood shop class and we were learning about safety procedures. My teacher told us to turn off all the power equipment when he leaves the classroom for safety. Because when he's in the classroom supervising, if he were to use 10% of his vision, hell use 90% of his hearing. Since hes done his job for so long, he can hear what equipment isn't working right so he can immediately tell us.
I thought that was kind of interesting. When you think of jobs that really use hearing, most people would think of the music industry, but there are a lot more.

1st Day of School

English:

Today was the 1st day of school. It was really exciting getting see all of my friends I didnt have a chance to see over summer. It was a huge reunion. And this time im back as a sophomore! We have grade colors for like pep rally and stuff and this year the seniors were red, so the whole school was covered with red silly string, signs, carpet, cups, and seniors wearing their red class shirts going around screaming. The freshmen always get scared. Like last year, I was frightened out of my mind with huge signs saying "Freshmen=fresh meet." But its so much fun. Classes get hard, but starting out completely fresh is so nice.

2008 Summer Olympics

English:

Today is the final day for the 2008 Summer Olympics.
I had a really great time watching all the sports. All the athletes are so incredible!
It's really an inspiration watching so many people work hard and doing something they love.

During the ending ceremony, Leona Lewis and Jimmy Page also did a fantastic job. As well as all the performers and volunteers. I can't wait for the winter Olympics in Vancouver! :]]

Mamma Mia

I saw Mamma Mia! It was so amazing! I had been wanting to see the broadway for the longest time, but then my bestie took me to see the movie. Ahhh. I love all the songs.

Oh and starting Aug. 29th, select theaters nationwide are showing a special SING ALONG version of Mamma Mia! Thats super exciting.

But i also looooved all the scenery and how they shot the movie. Like the beach was beautiful! It was so creative. So for those who haven't already seen it, please watch it, or go to the sing along edition!

Doggy Deafness

Japanese:

English:

We all know it is common for people to have hearing disabilities, but have you ever thought of it in dogs?
I wouldn't have realized unless someone told me.
It's just so typical to understand that dogs have good hearing.
But dogs get hearing disabilities from the same factors as humans.

That is:
*genetics
*old age
*loud sound
*illness
*ear infections

For people who have dogs, you two can be careful about hearing disabilities together!

Testing for deafness

Japanese:

English:

Yearly, many babies are born with some extent of hearing impairment.
In most American hospitals, they have screening tests for newborns (either OAE or ABR).

You should check your baby's hearing if...
-he/she didn't do the OAE or ABR screening tests at the hospital
-he/she is diagnosed with a disease that might lead into hearing loss
-he/she doesn't react when a sound is made
-he/she doesn't react the same way to noise as other babies
-he/she talks too loudly
-he/she watches TV at a high volume

The fast you find out if your baby has a hearing problem, it can make the baby's speech, thinking, and learning closer to that of a hearing baby. And if you find out, you can place a hearing aid into the child before he/she has the strength to pull it out. That way your baby can get used to it.

Hiroshima Atomic Bomb

Japanese:

English:

On August 6, 1945, a devastating event occurred in Hiroshima, Japan.
At 8:15 AM an atomic bomb hit there killing over 140,000 people.
In those people, there are definitely deaf people. When the atomic bomb hit, they didn't know what had happened. Even when they tried to ask other people, they could not get though to them.
One of the deaf witnesses was told that an atomic bomb hit a year after the event.
People who can hear and people who can not saw the same disaster, but one difference would be that people who can hear got to gain information and talk about it to the rest of the population. When people who were deaf couldn't communicate with many people, therefore unable to gain understanding of  what was happening.
It was hard to tell other people about something this depressing.
I hope that something like this never happens again.

Japanese:

Today I went to the movies for the first time in Japan with my grandpa.
But there something happened.
From the beginning of the movie, there was no sound.
Then someone came out and apologized while everyone booed.
There I started thinking about deaf people, and realized that people (including me) tend to take hearing for granted.
Everyone was really angry about the movie with no sound, but to people who are deaf,  it is typical.
I still have a lot I don't know about people who are deaf, but I felt like that event made me understand a little bit better.
I was a little upset i couldn't see the movie, but i think it was a good experience.
